Are Big Cats stalking the UK?

Every few years or so, I see a story in the press relating to big cats within the UK. Is it really possible that alien species of large cat are roaming our land.

There is certainly a long history of sightings in the Northeast of England and the Durham Puma has gained a place in local folklore.

Many people believe that an initial ‘seed’ population of big cats were released following the strict guidelines imposed by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act (1976). The theory goes that people who previously owned big cats, but were unable or unwilling to comply with new licencing regulations simply let their animals escape into the countryside.

Over forty years later sightings are still being reported. So did that population not only survive, but thrive?
