When I first heard about the film Stan and Ollie, I cringed. There some classic things that simply do not work in modern updates; Dad’s Army, Whisky Galore, The Italian Job. So I was sceptical in the extreme when I heard that the 21st century film industry were going to produce a film about Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
Masters of comedy, both of them, nobody would be able to do Stan or Oliver justice. It simply was not possible and would result in a lacklustre 90 minutes of torture.
It seems I may have been a little overzealous in that judgement. Having watched the clips released on YouTube and the official trailers, Steve Coogan has absolutely nailed Stan Laurel, both with the voice and facial expressions. John C Reilly also presents us with a very convincing Oliver Hardy. Putting them both together in Stan and Ollie may just may, re-capture the magic and subsequent tragedy of the real Laurel & Hardy.
It opens across the UK on 11th January 2019 and I can’t wait to see it. Stan and Ollie promises to be a great opening to my cinematic viewing this year.
